European Funding

Structural funds are the European Union's main mechanism for helping with social and economic restructuring throughout the Union. For the period 2000-2006, the UK's allocation is approximately £10 billion.

The European Social Fund (ESF) is the key part of the structural funds targeted to develop labour markets and human resources and is directed at the long-term unemployed and those facing particular barriers to finding fulfilling employment because of their disability, racial origin, or sex. Southampton City Council and its partners have been successful in securing European Social Fund money to support local projects.

The European and International Service is working with local voluntary, training and educational organisations to improve access and to ensure a maximum take-up of European Social Fund support for local projects. The European & International Service are working hard to continue this work.

As well as the European Social Fund, there are many other strands of EU funding available within the United Kingdom. Further information on the programmes and publications available can be found on the UK website of the European Commission.
