Internal Award

Patricia Whitlock
(Toll Booth Operator - Itchen Bridge)

Patricia Whitlock June 2008

Carolyn Williamson, Executive Director for Resources, presents Patricia with her award

Nomination:

"I went to Itchen Bridge, unannounced, around 10am. I was visiting to investigate the opportunities for sponsorship of the site. Presentation and service are just as important as available space and traffic flow for successful sponsorship. I was first served at the toll booth by on older lady with dark hair, who in the short time it takes to receive £1 and give me 50 pence change, was very welcoming, cheerful and polite.

I was left thinking that for someone whose job would be a little monotonous and not target based, I received better service that I have done in large retail outlets where I have spent substantial amounts. I worked at M+S, staff had to be disciplined because they wouldn’t say “Hello and how can I help you”!

I then knocked on the door of the control centre and was warmly welcomed by the manager Mervin Sinclair who stopped what he was doing, made me a coffee and gave me his time and attention. I hadn’t booked a meeting with him! When I went back through the toll, a man in his thirties with very short hair gave me exactly the same level of service. These people did not know who I was. Although I was there on works business, it was a thoroughly pleasant visit."

External Award

Peter Barton
(Scientific Officer - Environmental Health & Consumer Protection)

Peter Barton June 2008

Lorraine Brown, Executive Director for Environment, presents Peter with his award

Nomination:

"Once again, myself and the other residents of 67 Anglesea Road, would like to extend our warmest thanks for the prompt and efficient action, by your department, following a call from us (in November) re. problems with noisy fans at the youth club that backs onto our flats. Once again, your whole department was excellent – from the initial telephone call, action was taken, and every subsequent call was followed up. We were particularly pleased to find that Mr Peter Barton, who dealt personally with our concerns last time, was still working in your department, and once again got immediately on to the case! He was as ever, a credit to your department, and dealt with the problem not only swiftly, but more importantly sensitively – so thanks again to him.

I know I mentioned this last time, but customer service in this country continues to be on the whole abysmal. Many companies and services would benefit from following the example of your department on how to do things well. Not just us, but other people we know, have been truly impressed by the way in which your department is conducted – so once again – heartfelt thanks go out to you."
