Thank you to everyone who voted for the project which received 42% of the votes. This is great news for Southampton and will radically improve access and links for cyclists and walkers in the city.
In Southampton, we will be creating a boardwalk along part of the River Itchen, from between Horseshoe Bridge, Priory Road, towards Northam Bridge, and opening up this area of the waterfront to the public. In addition, various links will feed into this scheme providing a substantial network that links the City Centre to Southampton University and Southampton Airport.
We fought off three other bids, including the Eden Project. Our scheme makes up one of 79 across the country all about creating essential links, bridges, cycle, and foot bridges.
This is a five year project, and work will begin in 2008. We'll keep you updated on its progress.
