Southampton City Council regularly and carefully maintains streets and pavements in the city to:
increase safety for pedestrians and road users
ensure traffic can flow smoothly
catch faults quickly before they cause major cost or delay
Maintaining Southampton's streets and pavements is a vital and major task for the council. Southampton has over 575km of streets and pavements, and over 26,777 street lights and other lit signs.
We have a rolling maintenance programme covering road surfaces, traffic signals and other street and pavement issues.

Road and footway works and maintenance
The city's roads and footways need regular maintenance to keep them safe and useable. Southampton City Council is responsible for maintaining the roads and pavements and we carry out planned roadworks at various locations across the city each year. The links on these pages give you the most up-to-date information about the road and pavement works going on in the city and include links to the ROMANSE sites, which contain traffic and travel information for Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton and an online form for reporting road or pavement faults.
Road signs
The council are responsible for non illuminated on-highway traffic signing (not parking), temporary event on-highway signing, carriageway markings, traffic guidance and adherence to legal requirements. Information on applying for signage and details of existing road signs can be found on this page.
Road obstructions
It is an offence to obstruct the free passage of the highway. Obstructions are objects which have been unlawfully placed on or which overhang the highway. To gain further information or to obtain a licence for activities permitted on the highway then look at the following pages.
Road weight limits
This service can provide information and advice on traffic signs, markings and traffic regulation orders.
Road flooding
If you wish to report a flooded road or footpath in the city then this can be done by telephoning Actionline or in person at Gateway.
Spillages on the road
The council deal with spillages on the highway that could cause an immediate hazard to users or to the environment. For example an oil or diesel spillage or other material falling from a vehicle onto the road.
Gritting
Southampton City Council grit the highway network to help the safe movement of all highway users, buses, cyclists, motorists and pedestrians in certain weather conditions.

Access requests (by utilities companies or developers)
If you are a utility company or developer looking to excavate the highway then you will need a licence to excavate and/or repair install plant. Further information can be found on these pages.
Vehicles with Abnormal Loads
Before a haulier can move an abnormal load, he must notify and gain consent from the police. The services for vehicles with abnormal loads are managed by Hampshire county council. Further information is available on the Hampshire county council website via the link on the right hand side of this page.
MOT Testing Service
Southampton City Council provides an MOT testing service from its Town Depot. Tests are carried out on our own vehicles as well as members of the public. Tests are by appointment only. The Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) inspects all new premises and the assessment and training of prospective Authorised Examiners (AE's) and Nominated Testers (NT's), to ensure any new businesses meet current MOT standards.
