Here you will find details of both current and planned major road works and road closures in Southampton. The information is in alphabetical order of the main road affected and gives details of the date and length of the work, the type of work and diversion routes.

Aberdeen Road
Works scheduled to commence: 13th July 2009
Approximate duration of works: 8 weeks
Nature of works: Gas main replacement work
Traffic management: Aberdeen Road will be closed 24 hours a day from its junction with Priory Road to a point 20m from its junction with Priory Road
Contractor: Southern Gas

Archers Road
Works scheduled to commence: 20th April 2009
Approximate duration of works: End of July
Nature of works: Gas main reinforcement work
Traffic management: Road has now been fully reopened although further works scheduled at the Archers Road/ Carlton Road/ Bannister Road junction

Bridge Road
Stage One:
Works scheduled to commence: 29th June 2009
Approximate duration of works: 5 days
Nature of works: Resurfacing work
Traffic management: Radstock Road and Aisla Lane are all to be closed from their junctions with Bridge Road.
Diversion: Will be signed locally

Stage Two:
Works scheduled to commence: 1st July 2009
Approximate duration of works: 5 days
Nature of works: Resurfacing work
Traffic management: Aisla Lane, Tranby Road and Peartree Road are to be closed (both eastern and western sections)
Diversion: Will be signed locally

Chapel Road
Stage One:
Works scheduled to commence: 27th July 2009
Duration of works: 4 weeks
Nature of works: Road resurfacing
Traffic Management: Chapel Road will be closed from its junction with Paget Street to its junction with City College entrance

Stage Two:
Works scheduled to commence: 24th August 2009
Duration of works: 14 weeks
Nature of works: Road resurfacing
Traffic Management: Chapel Road will be closed from its junction with St Mary Street to its junction with City College entrance

High Road
Works scheduled to commence: 6th July 2009 2009
Approximate duration of works: 9 weeks
Nature of works: Gas main replacement works
Traffic management: High Road will be closed southbound from its junction with Burgess Road to its junction with Langhorn Road 24 hours a day

High Street
Works scheduled to commence: September 2008
Duration of works: 44 weeks
Nature of works: Highway improvement works including road resurfacing
Traffic Management:
  • Between junctions with West Street and East Street, travel allowed northbound only.
  • On 3rd June for five nights, East Street will be closed from its junction with the High Street to its junction with York Buildings to allow carriageway resurfacing to take place.
  • From 3rd June for 20 weeks, partial road closure on High Street heading Northbound, from its junction with Town Quay to its junction with Briton Street to allow kerb and pavement reconstruction to take place.
Diversion: Town Quay, Orchard Place and Briton Street

Ivy Road
Works scheduled to commence: 6th July 2009
Approximate duration of works: 8 weeks
Nature of works: Gas main replacement works
Traffic management: Ivy Road will be closed 24 hours a day from its junction with Priory Road to a point 20m from its junction with Priory Road

Lyon Street
Works scheduled to commence: 7th July 2009
Duration of Works: One day (9:30-15:30)
Nature of Works: Repair to a leaking water valve

Millbrook Road West
Works scheduled to commence: 27th July 2009
Duration of Works: 15 days
Nature of Works: Carriageway Resurfacing
Traffic Management: Resurfacing will take place on the inbound carriageway between Regents Park Road and Mountbatten Way. There will be a reduction in lane capacity, together with a temporary speed limit of 30mph. At times the carriageway will be reduced to one lane, so delays may be experienced. It is advisable to seek alternative routes where possible, or allow more time for your journey.

Northam Road
Work scheduled to commence: 27th April 2009
Scheduled for completion: 17th July 2009
Nature of works: Gas main replacement works followed by kerb and pavement works.
Traffic management: There will be a lane closure outbound on Northam Road from its junction with Britannia Rd to its junction with Union Road. There will also be a lane closure on Britannia Road outbound at its junction with Northam Road for the same period.

Portsmouth Road
Work scheduled to commence: 26th May 2009
Scheduled for completion: February 2010
Nature of works: A major scheme of kerb, footway and carriageway improvements along Portsmouth Road, Sholing. Southampton City Council, working in conjunction with the Gas Board, will be replacing large sections of the pathway, improving drainage, and finally resurfacing the entire length from the roundabout near Itchen Bridge to the city boundary.
Traffic management: Temporary traffic signals will be in place for the majority of this period.

Stoneham Lane
Work scheduled to commence: 29th June 2009
Nature of works: Footway/ kerbing replacement
Traffic management: Stop/ Go

West End Road
Work scheduled to commence: 30th June 2009
Scheduled for completion: 10th August 2009
Nature of works: Gas main replacement works
Traffic management: Temporary traffic signals will be in operation 24 hours a day on West End Road from its junction with Chalk Hill to its junction with St Francis Avenue
Contractor: Southern Gas

West Quay Road
Work scheduled to commence: 19th July 2009
Scheduled for completion: 16th August 2009 (Sundays only)
Nature of works: Work on overhead electricity cables
Traffic management: West Quay Road will be closed in both directions from its junction with Mountbatten Way to its junction with Southern Road between 03:00 and 10:00 on Sundays only

Western Approach Flyovers at Millbrook and Redbridge
Work commenced: 3rd April 2009
Scheduled for completion: Late 2009
Nature of Works: Replacement of bridge bearings
Traffic management: Reduction in lane width, temporary 30mph speed limit for duration of works.
Diversion: N/A all traffic routed through the site at reduced speeds
Other details: All work is undertaken beneath the structures. No work force in road.

Weston Parade
Works scheduled to commence: 6th July
Due for completion: 10th July 2009
Nature of works: Car park works
Traffic management: Temporary traffic signals will be in operation 24 hours a day

Winchester Road
Work scheduled to commence: 22nd June 2009
Approximate duration: 3 Weeks
Nature of works: Major road resurfacing
Traffic control: Civil engineering works will be carried out during the day, but both lanes will remain open. The carriageway will be reduced to one way traffic between 7.30pm - 6am for night time resurfacing. Southbound traffic from the direction of Bassett Avenue will be able to use the road as normal, northbound traffic will be diverted via Burgess Road.

Wimpson Lane/ Windemere Avenue
Work scheduled to commence: 14th April 2009
Scheduled for completion: 25th September 2009
Nature of works: Kerbing and pavement works
Traffic control: Temporary signals will be in operation 24 hrs per day on Wimpson Lane at the junction with Windermere Avenue & Redbridge Hill
Contractor: Southampton City Council and Diamond Signs
