School Crossing Patrol Service

Aim of the service

To manage and promote Southampton's School Crossing Patrol Service in accordance with the national ‘Guidelines for management and operation of the school crossing patrol service’ and City Council policy.

About the service

The school crossing patrol service was introduced in 1950 by the Metropolitan Police. It became official with the introduction of the London Traffic Law of 1953. Officers currently operate at over 50 locations on routes to schools across the City.

It is not mandatory for a local authority to provide patrols, but the City Council is committed to this valued and well-respected service.

Are you available Monday to Friday for up to 40 minutes in the morning and afternoon? Do you enjoy working with people and assisting your local community?

We have a wide ranging, dedicated team of people already operating as patrols in the City. As well as crossing children and parents, you will also be able to assist the general public should they request to cross with you.
