What are School Travel Plans?

A School Travel Plan is a document produced by the whole school community and any other interested parties. It looks at how pupils, staff, visitors and other site users travel to and from school.

Travel Surveys

The first step in the process is to carry out staff and pupil travel surveys.

Action Plan

The action plan is developed after problems and issues from the surveys and consultation have been identified.

Pupil Participation

STP Review

The STP is not a definitive document; schools commit to review their plan on an annual basis.

Grants

As part of completing an approved School Travel Plan, the City Council awards schools with a grant to enable them to purchase either secure cycle storage or a parent waiting shelter.

School Zones

Southampton City Council has made a commitment to implement 20 mph zones outside all Southampton schools, with the aim of ensuring drivers are aware of the need for caution at all times when passing a school.
