Travel plan fact sheet

What is a Travel Plan?

A Travel Plan is a series of measures designed to promote sustainable travel options to, from and at the workplace. Travel Plans are not anti-car but are implemented to give employees more travel choice.

Travel Plans are site-specific and will differ based on the nature of the business, the location of the workplace and the number of staff employed. They can cover several types of journey affecting your business such as:

Commuting

Business Travel

Visitors

Deliveries

Fleet Vehicles

Why have a Travel Plan and what will it do for your business?

It is estimated that congestion costs UK businesses £20 billion per year. There are more cars on our roads than ever before and congestion is an ever-growing problem.

By promoting alternative modes of transport you will help alleviate these problems.

A Travel Plan can also help you:

Produce a healthier, less stressed and more productive workforce

Significantly cut journey times and the time your staff spend sitting in traffic jams

Free up parking spaces which can costs businesses between £400 and £800 for every space to maintain per year

Improve your businesses’ environmental image

A Travel Plan network has been running in Southampton for a number of years. The network is open to employers of all sizes who have a Travel Plan in place, are interested in developing one or are interested in related issues.

Being part of the network, which is currently split into a City Centre Group and a North West Group, is free and provides a good introduction to Travel Plan issues. It will also give you the opportunity to meet other employers in your region and discuss local transport issues.
