If you want to know about cycling - or are just thinking about cycling in Southampton - this is a good place to start. Hopefully you will find these pages a useful one stop shop for cycling in and around the city.

Our cycling development officer can provide you with information about cycle routes and events across the city. The contact details can be found below.

Connect 2 Public Art Project

Residents in Southampton are being given the chance to choose which local people to immortalise in steel on the new Connect 2 River Itchen boardwalk and cycle route.

Sustainable transport charity Sustrans is adding Portrait Benches to new routes across the country. The benches offer cyclists and walkers a chance to rest as they make their way along the route, while reflecting on the local landscape. The benches will immortalise three local people in steel, and will act as a permanent reminder of the creation of the path, and the work undertaken by Sustrans and the Big Lottery Fund.

We want you to tell us which local figures should be represented in this exciting project. This could include local celebrities, historical figures or champions of the local community. Please send your suggestions to the contact details at the bottom of this page.

The Southampton scheme is part of Sustrans’ Connect 2 project, which won £50million from a Big Lottery Grant following a public vote in 2007. The project will enhance walking and cycling routes in dozens of areas across the country.

Biking for Beginners

Sky Ride will be offering two one day Biking for Beginners courses to make it as easy as possible for anyone to get the most out of life on two wheels. The first course is on 24 October with another available in the Spring. The aim of the course is to provide you with a 'one stop shop' for everything you need to know to get riding - it doesn't matter if you have no knowledge of riding skills, road safety, bike maintenance or route planning - we will give you the skills you need.

So if you were one of the thousands of cyclists that took part in the city's Sky Ride event at the start of the summer and want to know how to take your cycling experiences a step further, Biking for Beginners is for you. The first course will take place at St Denys Community Centre and will include:

  • Cycling advice
  • Training for all abilities
  • Road safety advice
  • Bike security advice
  • Basic bike maintenance
  • Bike doctor
  • Free bike loan for the duration of the event (subject to deposit and ID)
  • Route and journey planning advice
  • Group rides
