About Southampton Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC)

The Southampton recycling site is managed for the council by Veolia UK Ltd.

The HWRC (known by many as 'the tip' or 'the dump') is a site where you can take a wide range of items and materials to be recycled instead of throwing them away.

Opening hours and visiting

The HWRC is open seven days a week (closed 12.30-1pm), except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day when the site is closed. 

  • 9am to 5pm 1 March to 31 March
  • 9am to 6pm 1 April to 30 September
  • 9am to 4pm 1 October to 28 February

Bookings are required 

Please note that bookings are required for visits to all Hampshire HWRCs. Same day bookings are available and can be made online or by phone. There is no height restriction at Southampton City Depot HWRC.

Access for cyclists and pedestrians

Cyclists are permitted to visit Southampton HWRC. Cyclists will be treated the same as other vehicles. They must:

  • Join the queue and not overtake other vehicles
  • Park, in turn, into a parking bay
  • Comply with the Highway Code

While entering, queuing and exiting the HWRC, cyclists must not dismount their bicycles. High visibility clothing is recommended but not obligatory.

There is no pedestrian access at Southampton HWRC.

There are some specific rules for visiting the centre if you are driving larger vehicles or disposing of certain materials like construction waste.
