• Fridges and freezers - appliances should be brought whole with no parts removed

Each Southampton household may deposit up to eight 50-litre rubble bags, or four bulky items of DIY waste, free of charge every four weeks. Any DIY waste which exceeds this allowance will be chargeable.

What is DIY waste?

For the purposes of Hampshire’s HWRCs, DIY waste is any waste arising from a resident’s own DIY works in a domestic property subject to pay Council Tax to Southampton City Council.

Southampton residents will not need to register their vehicles to use the Southampton HWRC or the Portsmouth HWRC. However, vehicle registration is required for all other HWRCs in Hampshire, including the Netley site.

Vehicle height restrictions

There is no height restriction barrier, but businesses intending to use commercial vehicles to dispose of business waste at the site should contact our commercial waste service to get help.

Vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes and trailers longer than three meters are not permitted.

Disabled access

If you are disabled and have a special vehicle, please call 023 8078 4679 so we can arrange access during the week.

Commercial vehicles

If you are using a commercial vehicle, or a trailer longer than 1.8 metres (six feet) to bring your items to the centre, you will need to have a permit to get access. To obtain a permit, please complete a permit application form or contact Hampshire County Council on 0300 555 1389.

Household DIY waste and chargeable waste at household waste recycling centres

Each Hampshire household may deposit up to eight 50-litre rubble bags, or four bulky items, free of charge every four weeks. Any waste which exceeds this allowance will be chargeable. For advice and information please see DIY waste allowance details at Household DIY and chargeable waste.

What is DIY waste?

For the purposes of Hampshire’s HWRCs, DIY waste is any waste arising from a resident’s own DIY works in a domestic property subject to pay Council Tax to Southampton City Council.

Please note: only card payments are available at all household waste recycling centres

Payment should be made prior to depositing materials in skips.

Charges for soil, rubble, plasterboard and asbestos are as follows:

• Soil and rubble: £3.00 per part or whole standard rubble bag, and £3.00 per individual item (for example, sanitary units such as wash basin, pedestal, toilet bowl and cistern)
• Plasterboard: £6 per standard rubble bag or part bag, or £10 per sheet or part sheet, maximum size 3000 x 1200mm
• Cement-bonded asbestos: £12 per sheet or part sheet, maximum size 1200 x 600mm

Standard rubble bags are up to a maximum size of 535 x 820mm (when laid flat), filled so that the waste is contained and can be safely lifted.

We do acknowledge that some customers may have trouble lifting standard size bags and may use smaller bags or only partially filled bags. In these instances we request that staff make an estimate as to the equivalent number of standard size rubble bags the waste would fill and calculate charges accordingly. For example, three bags that are each one third full would be charged as one whole bag.

Site staff are available to help anyone who may have difficulty removing items from their vehicle.

Soil and rubble includes construction and demolition materials such as stone, rubble, clay, concrete, bricks, blocks, sand, tiles, paving slabs and ceramic bathroom suites. There are no charges for crockery or clay/terracotta flower pots.

Cement-bonded asbestos is only accepted at Netley, Andover, Basingstoke, Efford and Portsmouth HWRCs. Other types of asbestos are not accepted.

Standard-sized cement-bonded asbestos sheets (approximately 120cm x 60cm) can be taken to one of five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in Hampshire that are specially licensed to receive this type of hazardous waste. No other types of asbestos are accepted.

Please note: You must phone the HWRC in advance to pre-book acceptance or you may not be able to deposit your cement-bonded asbestos.

For health and safety reasons, all whole sheets should be wrapped securely in plastic sheeting and transported whole. Small or broken pieces should be double bagged and securely sealed. Avoid breaking the material where possible.
