Preparing for a flood

There are a number of things that you as an individual, community or business can do to prepare for flooding. 

What to do during a flood

Call 999 if there is a danger to life
  • Avoid walking or driving through or near flood water
  • Do not touch sources of electricity if you are standing in water
  • Avoid contact with flood water and wash your hands regularly
  • Collect your flood kit and ensure it is with you at all times
  • Evacuate the property if it is safe to do so. If it is not safe, contact the emergency services and await further instruction
  • Help anyone nearby that you know may be less able, such as the elderly or disabled, but only if it is safe to do so, if not, make the emergency services aware
  • Stay informed – Listen to the radio and TV, check social media and use the Environmental Agency’s Floodline on 0345 988 1188. For specific information on areas in Southampton call Floodline and dial the following Environment Agency quick dial codes:
