Dealing with hate crime

The number of hate crimes reported to the police in England and Wales has doubled in the last five years. This shocking figure shows that more people are being subjected to harassment or crime simply because of who they are.

We believe that everyone living in Southampton should be free to live in peace and we’re doing all we can to protect residents from hate crime, make sure victims receive better support and strengthening the work to prevent vulnerable people from being targeted.

What is hate crime?

Hate crime is when a person, or group of people, bullies or hurts someone because they don't like who they are. This could be because of their age, disability, gender, race, religion or their sexual orientation. Attackers could be of any age or anyone: a stranger, a parent, a carer, a friend or a neighbour.

Together with the police we are working to tackle hate crime in our city.

What to do if you have been a victim or witness of hate crime?

If it is a dangerous situation, for example if a crime is in progress, violence is being used or threatened or there is danger to life, dial 999 immediately.
