Southampton City Memorial to D-Day & Operation Overlord

We the undersigned petition the council to ….......move the Admiralty Anchor currently in Mountbatten Way to Mayflower Park as a memorial to the estimated 3.5m troops that embarked from Southampton during World War 2. There is no significant memorial to the role the port of Southampton played during D-Day and Operation Overlord in the city. In my previous attempt to recognise this achievement I had online arguments with mature, intelligent individuals when I stated that any application for UNESCO World Heritage status would be a 'shoe-in' because without Southampton there would be no UNESCO. They obviously thought I was joking. But Major-General, Sir Nigel Holmes, cited in Bernard Knowles, 'Southampton, The English Gateway' states that, 'Without Southampton we could not have done D-Day'. Because the role of the port was a secret at the time a generation has grown up without appreciating the historical significance of Southampton.

The Admiralty Anchor was recently obscured from view by an electronic billboard hoarding and the simple expedient of moving the artefact would help remedy the record of Southampton's finest hour.
