Extend “Safer Route to Schools” scheme

We the undersigned petition the council to Extend the "Safer Routes to School" scheme via new funding streams, to include all schools in Southampton. including Foundry Lane Primary School.

Recently, the council successfully achieved funding for infrastructure improvements to roads and footways around 5 Southampton schools. This is brilliant news as these improvements will make it safer for those getting to and from these schools by foot, bike or wheel. However, there are many other schools in Southampton where their proximity to busy through-roads, dangerous crossing points and general high volumes of vehicle traffic present safety issues for children.

Here at Foundry Lane school, the school site is hemmed in by a grid of roads that get very busy at drop-off / pick up times, with a mix of local and school traffic. Our School Streets scheme allows one section of the road to be temporarily closed at the beginning and end of the school day. However, despite the improvements this scheme has brought, there are still safety issues around the junctions. We feel that a programme of infrastructure improvements is needed to reduce the road speed in the area and make the crossing points for pedestrians safer.

- We therefore want to see the council pursue new funding streams so that the “Safer Routes to School” scheme can be extended to Foundry Lane and all other schools in the city.
- When considering future applications, we would like to see the council consult more widely amongst school, parent and school street teams in order to develop a clear understanding of the safety issues and potential improvements at every school site.
- We are not asking for a share of the funds from the existing funding application - we would like to see this money spent well at the sites already committed to.

Our children’s safety is paramount and we want to see every possible step taken to ensure all our children can walk or wheel safely to and from their school.
