20mph for Anglesea Road, Shirley

We the undersigned petition the council to We, the undersigned, hereby request Southampton City Council to implement a 20mph speed limit on Anglesea Road, Shirley.

Southampton City Council has introduced a new process allowing communities to request 20mph speed limits in their local neighbourhoods. The move is designed to make the city's residential areas safer and more pleasant, particularly for more vulnerable road users such as children, the elderly, people with disabilities and those travelling on foot or by bike.

The announcement follows the publication of the council's new Corporate Plan for 2021-2025, which outlines a commitment to improving the city's highways for all users. This includes the delivery of new 20mph limits, which are shown to reduce both the occurrence and severity of road traffic collisions, as well as overall vehicle speeds.

Anglesea Road branches off from the top of Shirley high street and meets up with Winchester Road at the opposite end. There is a school, Wordsworth, positioned halfway down the road and a busy play park St James park, positioned at the other. The road is well used by drivers and pedestrians at all times of day. Reducing the speed of the road will help to make it a more pleasant place to be a pedestrian and safer place for children getting to and from school and visiting the park.

Council response

Thank you for taking the time to present your petition for a 20mph speed limit in the streets listed, and bringing this to the attention of Southampton City Council.

In November 2021, the Council launched a formal residents request process for 20mph speed limits. The deadline for submitting requests closed on 14th January 2022. Following the deadline, officers reviewed all the formal requests received. The strength of local support (including e-petitions), and support from ward councillors was considered alongside other matters such as traffic data and the feasibility of 20mph limits areas/boundaries, to come up with a list of areas to progress, drawing upon the new £1million budget allocation.

In total, the Council received requests demonstrating community support for 47 streets or areas. All these have been consolidated into 14 areas which will be individually consulted over the next two years through to the end of 2023.

A list of the areas and a map can be found on the dedicated 20mph webpage: https://transport.southampton.gov.uk/20mph . There is also a useful Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section on the webpage, which can help answer any queries on the process and next steps.
