20mph for Manor Farm Road

We the undersigned petition the council to create a 20mph speed limit on Manor Farm Road. The council has committed funding for implementing 20mph limits in residential areas of the city where feasible and where there is strong community support. Manor Farm Road is almost entirely residential, with an Infants and Junior School in the middle and shops at Bitterne Park Triangle, plus a bus route between the Triangle and Nursery Road. Pavements on this road are used daily by families walking, scooting and cycling to Riverside Park and to the two primary schools and by older children accessing Bitterne Park School, on foot, by bus and bicycle and having to cross the road. Vehicles using Manor Farm Road are mostly en route to and from the City Centre and to other destinations and many drive over the current speed limit. This is unacceptable. We believe that a 10mph reduction in the speed limit will bring a safer and less stressful environment for residents of, and visitors to, Manor Farm Road.

We have the support of our three Ward Councillors

Council response

Thank you for taking the time to present your petition for a 20mph speed limit in the streets listed, and bringing this to the attention of Southampton City Council.

In November 2021, the Council launched a formal residents request process for 20mph speed limits. The deadline for submitting requests closed on 14th January 2022. Following the deadline, officers reviewed all the formal requests received. The strength of local support (including e-petitions), and support from ward councillors was considered alongside other matters such as traffic data and the feasibility of 20mph limits areas/boundaries, to come up with a list of areas to progress, drawing upon the new £1million budget allocation.

In total, the Council received requests demonstrating community support for 47 streets or areas. All these have been consolidated into 14 areas which will be individually consulted over the next two years through to the end of 2023.

A list of the areas and a map can be found on the dedicated 20mph webpage: https://transport.southampton.gov.uk/20mph . There is also a useful Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section on the webpage, which can help answer any queries on the process and next steps.
