I was born in Perth, Western Australia, and moved to Southampton in 1985 to work for the Medical Research Council. I am now retired, but have an Emeritus Professorship in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton; from 1996 to 2015 I was a visiting Professor at the North West University in South Africa.
I am a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health. I was Founding president of The World Public Health Nutrition Association.
At a local level, I established Labour Grassroots, a community organisation designed to help support people in their own homes. In the past I have sat on many local and national nutrition and health steering committees. Based on our own research we established with the Southampton City Council a ‘Breaking the Cycle Project’ aimed at improving nutrition and health in South Asian women in the city. This won a regional prize for excellence.
