Get back in the saddle
Sky Ride Southampton returns this weekend, with over 10,000 cyclists expected to descend on the city’s traffic-free route to make the most of all-things cycling.
Covering a five mile circuit around the city, Sky Ride Southampton starts from Guildhall Square at 11am on Sunday 12 June, finishing at 3pm. Riders can cycle for the full four hours or join in whenever they please and complete as many circuits as they like.
Councillor Satvir Kaur, Southampton City Council's cabinet member for Communities, Culture and Leisure, who will be opening the event alongside the Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Cathie McEwing and Councillor Eamonn Keogh, said: "I'm really excited to be joining thousands of other cyclists for Southampton's seventh Sky Ride. Being one of the most successful in the country, this event goes from strength to strength with people from all backgrounds, abilities and ages taking part together, using the opportunity with their families to take in the sights and entertainment our great city has to offer.
"I hope local residents and visitors alike take full advantage, from those who are passionate cyclists to others - like me - who could do with dusting off the old bike and getting back on the saddle."
Dr Bob Coates, Interim Director of Public Health at Southampton City Council, added: “We are delighted to again welcome Sky Ride to Southampton. Inactivity is a major contributing factor to diseases ranging from type two diabetes and heart disease to depression and dementia. My hope is that Sky Ride will act as the catalyst needed to inspire people from all ages and walks of life in Southampton to be more active every day.”
'Time To Change'
Alongside the established My Journey Village based in Houndwell Park, where you will find all of the usual activities and entertainment, Southampton City Council will be bringing the Time To Change pop-up village to Palmerston Park (next to the bandstand).
The Time To Change village will help to raise awareness of mental health and to call for an end to mental health stigma, offering cyclists the chance to stop by and discover techniques for improving their own mental wellbeing and to learn more about mental health and combating stigma in an interactive and fun setting.
