Bassett Avenue Resurfacing Works

Major road improvements to Bassett Avenue to commence on Sunday 11 February

Balfour Beatty, Southampton City Council’s highways partner is resurfacing Bassett Avenue between Winchester Road and Chilworth Roundabout. Work is planned to commence from 8pm on Sunday, 11 February and is expected to take seven weeks (weather permitting).

Work is being undertaken in two phases:

Phase one, to relocate any damaged or deteriorating manholes and drains, is expected to take four weeks. To undertake this construction work safely, two lanes of Bassett Avenue will need to be closed for the duration and Bassett Avenue will become one way, outbound only.

Phase two, to plane and resurface the road, is expected to take three weeks. This work can be carried out overnight with the road reopened as normal during the day. This work requires the full closure of Bassett Avenue from 8pm until 6am.

In addition to resurfacing the road, overgrown vegetation is being cleared from the shared footway and cycleway. Pedestrian and cyclist access is being maintained via the shared use pavement. For information about affected bus services please contact your bus provider.

Alternative routes for inbound (southbound) traffic from the M3
We are advising drivers approaching Southampton from the M3 motorway to use alternative routes into the city via the M27 junctions 3 and 5. Inbound (Southbound) traffic reaching Chilworth Roundabout will be diverted via Bassett Green Road and should expect delays at peak times.
