City Council starts work on largest Housing With Care development at Wimpson Lane

Building works have begun to construct 99 new affordable homes at Wimpson Lane in Maybush, Southampton, including 84 Extra Care apartments and 15 general needs flats for the over 50's.

The new development, named Potters Court, will be built on the site of the former Woodside Lodge dementia care home on Wimpson Lane, and will be the largest Housing With Care housing scheme in the city.

This Housing With Care development will provide purpose built homes for adults of all ages who would benefit from being able to live independently in a supportive environment with communal and care facilities on hand.

Potters Court will give tenants freedom and flexibility, with the option for care when desired. Residents will live in their own private home, with their own front door and can choose to join in social activities or follow their own schedule.

The scheme will include 84 homes within a Housing with Care facility, two-thirds of them being one-bedroom apartments and one-third, two-bedroom apartments. These will be for qualified city residents with an assessed care need. The development will include a communal lounge, guest suite, plus a community dining facility which can be used by others within the wider locality. Energy saving facilities including ground and air-source heat pumps and solar panels are also included in the design. The scheme will also provide 15 general needs homes for over-50’s, made up of 9 x 1-bed and 6 x 2-bed apartments.

The Scheme is being constructed for the City Council by regional contractor Drew Smith part of Galliford Try Partnerships and Regeneration at a cost of £23 million.

Councillor Christopher Hammond, Leader of Southampton City Council, commented: "We are committed to a programme of Housing with Care developments across the city and following the highly successful development at Erskine Court are delighted that this project, to be known as Potters Court, will now be starting on site."

Councillor Warwick Payne, Cabinet Member for Housing and Adult Care, said: "I am pleased that building works have begun at Potters Court, helping Southampton residents who may need support in their home but want to remain independent. With the recent opening of Erskine Court in Lordshill and Potters Court, we're on track to expand the total number of Housing With Care flats in the years ahead. We believe Housing With Care is the future when it comes to providing the homes that the elderly and vulnerable both need and want, providing on-site facilities, more independence and better outcomes."

Drew Smith Managing Director, Stuart Munro, commented "This is the second Extra Care facility that we will deliver for the Council within the last 3 years and we are delighted that we can contribute once again to support the need for new housing with care in Southampton."

Construction has begun in June 2018, with the project estimated for completion by October 2020.
