CitizEn Energy goes green, and could save you up to £235!

CitizEn Energy is a not-for-profit energy provider established by Southampton City Council.

By supplying fairly priced energy, CitizEn Energy's ambition is to help keep some of the region’s most vulnerable households warm and well. They’re helping the environment too, by supplying green CitizEn_Energy_Launchelectricity across all of their tariffs. Their green electricity is certified as 100% renewable from solar and wind farms across the UK.

If residents are with one of the ‘Big Six’ energy companies and they switch to CitizEn Energy they could make an average saving of up to £235*

Cabinet member for Green City at Southampton City Council, Councillor Steve Leggett, said,

“We’re delighted to announce that CitizEn Energy has gone green! All of the electricity we supply is now certified as coming from UK based wind and solar farms. CitizEn Energy’s use of renewable energy highlights our commitment as a council to tackle climate change, foster clean growth, improve air quality and help protect the environment.

CitizEn Energy is a not-for-profit company, so, unlike the private energy suppliers, any surplus made will be reinvested into local energy efficiency initiatives to deliver real savings for the customers. By putting people before profits we’re also able to offer our energy at competitive rates. As we approach the colder months, we hope this will help the many who are really struggling to pay their energy bills. We want to help make a real difference, and work towards fighting fuel poverty.”

CitizEn Energy hopes to further reduce the carbon footprint of residents, whilst saving them money on their energy bills, by using any money made to help fund local energy efficiency projects. This will help bolster the council’s £33.7 million worth of energy efficiency work they have carried out on resident’s homes in the last 6 years.

CitizEn Energy is particularly keen to help, and offer advice to, households who haven’t switched recently, and are on expensive prepayment meters. These customers are most likely to be paying over the odds for their energy, and are likely to make the most savings. As well as keeping prices low, CitizEn Energy will also be keeping things simple by offering straight forward tariffs, and providing an easy switching process.

CitizEn Energy aren’t just aiming to save Southampton residents money. Covering parts of the South, South West and the Midlands, CitizEn Energy already have customers that stretch across Hampshire, to the Midlands, Cornwall and beyond.

CitizEn Energy will be signposting their customers to a number of local organisations who offer energy efficiency advice and funding. One of these organisations is the Environment Centre (tEC). Their Southampton Healthy Homes service offers free and impartial information and advice on things such as: reducing your energy and water bills, replacing broken heating and heating or insulation grants.
