Southampton City Council is urging residents to see if they could save hundreds on their energy bills.
CitizEn Energy has launched a new gas and electricity tariff, which is just for locals. The new 12 month fixed Local Tariff will be available to households across Southampton, and is cheaper than all of the big six energy providers*. This tariff could save residents on average £233, and is only available for a limited time only*.
Denise Edghill, Service Director for Growth at Southampton City Council, said:
“CitizEn Energy’s main aim is to try to help those who are struggling to pay their energy bills. Whether you are finding money a challenge, or you just want a better deal, this is a great tariff available to all our Southampton households. Many could see savings of hundreds of pounds, especially if they’ve not switched for a while. Another important factor is that the electricity supplied is from sustainable sources, so there is a good reason for all to get involved.”
Whilst this tariff is for Southampton residents only, CitizEn Energy also has tariffs available for households across the South, South West and the Midlands.
Backed by Southampton City Council, CitizEn Energy was set up with the primary aim of helping those who are really struggling to pay their energy bills, and for those who have never switched energy supplier and often overpaying. In 2017 OFGEM reported that only 18% of households switched energy supplier, and more than half of consumers (58%) have never switched supplier, or have switched only once. 60% of consumers are on a default variable tariff, which means they are missing out on cheaper tariffs available to them (in 2017).
It is hoped that being council backed, CitizEn Energy will encourage people who are typically unlikely to switch, to see if they could save by switching, and ultimately save money on their energy bills.
CitizEn Energy’s electricity tariffs are also green, and certified as 100% renewable from solar and wind farms across the UK**.
Customers also don’t have to compromise on customer services, as CitizEn Energy’s customer service provider was voted the 2nd best in the UK in a recent survey. They were rated as good or excellent against value for money, customer services, and bill accuracy by over 78 per cent of those surveyed.

*The estimated saving of £233 is a comparison against the average price of a Big Six standard variable tariff (taken on 15.04.19). This is based on a dual fuel, average medium user, based on prices taken on 15.04.19.
**Our green electricity tariffs are certified as being sourced from UK based wind and solar generators. For every Megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity purchased for our customers, we also purchase a Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificate, which proves the electricity is certified as being sourced either directly from the renewable generators or through a green wholesale energy provider.
