The free event brings together adults with learning disabilities, as well as their carers
Leading local and national organisations supporting adults with learning disabilities will be showcasing at a Learning Disability Open Day drop-in event on Saturday 2 November 10-3pm at Oasis Academy School Lord's Hill.
The free event aims to bring together adults with learning disabilities, as well as their carers, paid or unpaid, to find out more about what local support is available.
Representatives will be on-hand from more than 25 different local adult health and care providers such as Shared Lives, Autism Hampshire, Dimensions, City Telecare, Life Skills (including employment support), Kentish Road Respite Centre and a range of Learning Disability Day Services. Exhibitors will be able to provide information about a range of topics, including, how to access a Learning Disability annual health check, local housing options, accessible activities and much more.
There will also be helpful presentations from guest speakers, including:
- Lawrie McMenemy, ex-Southampton Football Club Manager and Special Olympics GB President - Who will be talking about his involvement in the Special Olympics and work with Southampton Oakland’s Team and Recreational Sports (OTARS)
- Active Nation - talking about their award winning ActiveAbility programme, making sports and activity accessible to disabled people throughout the Solent region
- Paradigm - Who will be talking about the Gr8 Support Movement, as well as the newly refreshed REACH Standards, which are applicable to supported living
The day will also provide interactive workshops, an opportunity for carers to find out more about what support is on offer to them and network with other carers in a friendly and supportive environment. Free refreshments are provided.
Councillor Lorna Fielker, Cabinet Member for Adult Care, said “This is a great opportunity for those living in Southampton with a learning disability and their carers to find out what help, support and activities are available locally to help increase independence.”
This event is primarily aimed at adults with learning disabilities and their carers, however some stall holders will be able to support and provide information to all age ranges and family members.
