Marking NHS, Social Care & Frontline Workers Day and the 73rd birthday of the NHS and social care

We are marking NHS, Social Care & Frontline Workers Day and the 73rd birthday of the NHS and social care on Monday 5 July 2021.

Guildhall lit up blue

Monday 5 July 2021 marks 73 years since our pioneering National Health Service (NHS) and social care were born, making a historic day in our country’s history. The NHS and social care were born out of a long-held ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth.

To mark the day, the Frontline Workers Day flag will be raised at the front of the Civic Centre with The Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Alex Houghton and Southampton City Council Cabinet Leader, Councillor Daniel Fitzhenry, in attendance.

The Southampton 02 Guildhall and the Southampton City Library will be lit blue for all frontline workers.

Leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Daniel Fitzhenry, said:“Today we not only thank our wonderful NHS and social care employees. we also thank all frontline staff – our waste and recycling crews, our street cleaning teams, children’s services, public health, bereavement services and parks teams, to name just a few. And thank you to all those people keeping things going in the voluntary, independent, mutual organisations and private sector too, from shop workers to the people keeping the port running.

“Our social care staff and other frontline colleagues have been instrumental to the COVID-19 response and it’s great that we have this day to show our gratitude and to highlight the amazing work of all the people that help keep Southampton moving.”

Dr Pritti Aggarwal, local GP and clinical lead at NHS Hampshire, Southampton and Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group said: “The NHS, in its 73 years, has been all about treating and supporting people with their health in times of need, and never has that been more so than in the last 18 months. I want to say a huge thank you to all of the key workers in Southampton and beyond. Whether you work or volunteer in frontline health and care, the police, the fire brigade, the city council, in our local shops and supermarkets or in any other of our vital services, thank you.”

On Monday a series of events will take place, raising money for two excellent causes – NHS Charities Together, which supports 250 hospitals and their charitable trusts, and the National Care Association, representing 1.6 million workers caring for some of society’s frailest citizens.
