Work to start on scheme to improve journey times and reduce congestion on the A3035 St Denys Road

Southampton City Council will begin works on Monday 22 August 2022 and will last for approximately 15 weeks. For the duration of the works St Denys Road will be closed eastbound only between the A335 junction and Belmont Road.

The scheme will see a number of improvements on St Denys Road (A3035) and its junction with the A335 Thomas Lewis Way. The improvements include better facilities for walking, cycling and bus travel; junction changes; and upgrades to traffic signals

£1m has been allocated by the council for this scheme and the designers have calculated that bus journey times will be reduced by up to 6 minutes along the St Denys corridor at peak times in the afternoon as a result. Improvements at the busy junction will also include:

  1. An extension to the dedicated left turning lane on Thomas Lewis Way, onto St Denys Road heading towards Bitterne Triangle, to reduce congestion.
  2. New intelligent traffic signals at the junction. These will provide smoother and more efficient traffic movements in the area
  3. Safer crossing points for pedestrians.

The work will be completed in phases by our Highway partner Balfour Beatty.

Councillor Keogh, Cabinet Member for Transport and District Regeneration says: “Our Local Transport Plan, Connected Southampton 2040, identifies the need for a connected city with fast, efficient transport options and this scheme will contribute to achieving that vision. Everyone who uses the junction of St Denys Road and Thomas Lewis Way should benefit from these improvements, whether they travel by bus, on foot, by bike or by car.”
