New affordable homes completed at Starboard Way in Lordshill

The site of the former Oaklands School off Fairisle Road in Lordshill has been transformed into 103 much-needed new affordable homes

The new properties at Starboard Way include a mix of council housing for rent and shared ownership homes to buy.

The development contains 28 houses and 9 flats built for shared ownership. All of the properties have now been sold, allowing residents to get their foot on the housing ladder if they cannot afford the mortgage on 100% of the home. Thanks to the shared ownership scheme, the new homeowners were able to purchase a share of the value of the home, (typically a 40% share) and now pay rent only on the remainder of the value of the home which wasn’t purchased. Further shares of the property can be purchased over time, all the way up to 100% ownership and this is called "staircasing".

The other houses and flats in Starboard Way have all been allocated to people from our Housing Register who have been waiting for a council home. The mix of two, three, and four bedroom houses and one and two-bedroom flats are the newest council homes to have been built in Southampton, helping to meet the increasing demand for council housing locally.

The whole development was built with energy efficiency in mind and includes solar panels. The new development also includes a cycle path.

All of the homes have now been sold at Starboard Way, but if you are interested in buying a Shared Ownership property you can check your eligibility online.
