New car park for Millbrook

Parking issues at Honister Close in Millbrook will hopefully be solved thanks to £230,000 of Decent Neighbourhoods funding which is being used to create a much-needed new car park.

The new parking area, which will provide local residents with 24 spaces including two disabled bays, should be completed and ready for cars later this month. It has been made possible thanks to the Decent Neighbourhoods budget which aims to reinvest rent payer’s money into projects that benefit local communities. The project also includes the planting of lots of new trees, hedges, and plants to improve the look of the area and enhance biodiversity.

Almost 100% of the residents who responded to the consultation were in favour of the car park, with one local resident saying “there simply isn’t enough parking here and more residents have been receiving parking tickets and damaging the grass verges because there is nowhere for us to park legally. The new car park will make a big difference.”

The council’s archaeology team were involved with the excavation works on site and found evidence of prehistoric activity from the Bronze Age buried at Honister Close!

Over on the other side of the city, Decent Neighbourhoods funding has also been used to benefit residents, this time in Sholing. Work has recently completed to resurface the broken and uneven pavements and create new grassed areas around one block of flats at Montague Avenue. The project has improved the look of the area and enhanced safety for local people.

Other Decent Neighbourhoods projects that have been completed in council neighbourhoods over recent years include new community gardens with seating and growing areas, improved safety initiatives and even mosaics and community artwork. All the projects are delivered in partnership with local residents in response to requests for improvements made by local communities.

There are several Decent Neighbourhood projects on the horizon across the city. One upcoming project will involve transforming the area around the back of the five tower blocks at International Way in Weston. We are currently in the process of appointing a contractor to carry out the works which will include a new accessible footpath to run across the back of the blocks, new seating areas, play and fitness equipment.
