Southampton tenants contribute to regional training event

A group of Southampton City Council tenants recently joined social housing residents from across the region for an informative and interactive day of training and networking at The South Coast Training event

The annual event aims to empower tenants to learn new information and develop skills that will enable them to get more involved and make a difference to where they live. This year’s event was more important than ever considering the new government guidelines on increasing tenant involvement and satisfaction levels.

Workshops were delivered to equip tenants with knowledge of the new regulations including the impact of the Tenant Satisfaction Measures, Consumer Standards, and Building and Fire Safety engagement regulations.

As well as taking part in informative workshops, the event was an opportunity for tenants and housing staff from different councils and housing associations to chat, compare issues, ask advice, share ideas and discuss best practice about issues ranging from anti social behaviour to welfare reform and housing law.

Vicky a tenant from Bassett who attended the event said “It was great to meet tenants from other areas to hear how other landlords work, and to find out more about the important changes taking place to the way housing is regulated, and how we as tenants can influence this.”

The South Coast Training initiative first launched back in 1999 when Southampton City Council housing staff united with five other social housing providers to organise a pioneering regional conference. Since then, the training initiative has gone from strength to strength and now boasts two events each year encompassing representatives from:

  • Gosport Borough Council
  • New Forest District Council
  • Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council
  • Abri
  • VIVID Housing
  • Winchester County Council
  • Portsmouth City Council
  • Southampton City Council

To find out more about any of the issues discussed at this event, or if you would like to discover how you can get involved in future training opportunities please contact our Tenant Engagement Team. Did you know that we hold our own tenant conference each year which is free of charge for all Southampton City Council tenants and leaseholders to attend to discover more about the housing service you receive?
