Green Flags set to fly high in Southampton as new parks win prestigious award

Two more of Southampton’s much-loved parks have been officially recognised as country’s best after receiving the Green Flag Award

Southampton City Council are celebrating after Mayfield Park and Peartree Green received the Green Flag Award yesterday (Thursday 20 July). The international award highlights the best green spaces to visit and enjoy.

A record number of 2,216 parks and green spaces throughout the UK have been awarded the Green Flag Award, the largest number since the scheme began in 1996.

The news that Mayfield Park and Peartree Green has achieved accreditation – the international award for parks and green spaces – is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the teams and volunteers that care for the green spaces for everyone to enjoy it.

The two award-winning parks join the other six Green Flag parks which were awarded in 2022.

Councillor Eammon Keogh, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said:

"I am delighted that Mayfield Park and Peartree Green have received a Green Flag Award and can be added to our other award-winning parks. The award is a celebration of the hard work the teams carry out to keep our parks well looked after all year round. Well done to all involved and thank you for making our parks a brilliant and much-loved place for us all to enjoy".

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said:

"I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Mayfield Park and Peartree Green in achieving a Green Flag Award.

"Both Mayfield Park and Peartree Green provide a vital green space for the community in Southampton to visit, exercise and enjoy. Staff and volunteers work hard all year round to ensure that the parks maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud to have achieved this accreditation".

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
