The Ocean Globe Race begins on Sunday 10 September and 200 sailors will depart Southampton’s Ocean Village Marina onboard the 14 yachts to complete the four-leg, 27,000-mile race around the world via the three great capes:

  • Africa’s Cape of Good Hope
  • Australia’s Cape Leeuwin
  • South America’s notorious Cape Horn

The race village at Ocean Village Marina is open daily between 10am and 6pm from Tuesday 29 August until Sunday 10 September. Visitors can look around the competing boats, attend free talks and workshops and there is also plenty to do for children and families. Those visiting will also be able to enjoy some local food, drink and entertainment whilst soaking up the pre-race atmosphere.

The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Valerie Laurent said:

“It was a privilege to open the race village today. Ocean Globe Race is an iconic yacht race that we are once again very lucky to have departing from Southampton. I hope to see lots of families make the most of all the free activities and events available over the next twelve days. Best of luck to those competing.”

Councillor Satvir Kaur, Leader of Southampton City Council added:

"Southampton is proud of its maritime heritage and its track record of hosting amazing events. That’s why we are delighted to have The Ocean Globe Race in Ocean Village. This race will rekindle the spirit of the adventurous 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race and will highlight Southampton to the world as well as boost our local economy. I would like to encourage residents and visitors to take advantage of this great opportunity to see these incredible yachts and crews up close while they are here before they set off on their epic adventure around the globe and wish all those taking part - the skippers and crews every success”.

Entry to the race village is free and tickets can be booked on the MDL Marinas website.
