Consultation launched on improvements to Summers Street Park in Northam

Following our successful bid to the Levelling Up Parks Fund, a four-week consultation has launched on improvements to Summers Street Park in Northam, Southampton

Summers Street Park is an important park within the Bevois ward, providing much needed green space in a heavily built-up neighbourhood. In the past, the park has fallen victim to abuse which made it feel unsafe however we have undertaken improvements to reduce this. Recently enclosing the site with a park fence has had a positive impact by reducing anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping and vehicles driving onto the land and increasing use of the park by local families and dog walkers. We want to make this an even better place for residents and are putting forward more improvement ideas to provide a high-quality green space in this local area.

The £85,000 Levelling Up Parks Fund will go towards infrastructure changes, enhancements to the environment and biodiversity, and a new living boundary fence on the western border of the park.

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said:

“Our environment plays a vital role in our quality of life. We work hard to create cleaner, greener, safer and child-friendly neighbourhoods that give our communities a sense of pride.

“We are so lucky to have so many wonderful parks in Southampton with six of our parks already awarded with the international Green Flag Award and four more put forward for the award this year. We will continue improving our parks to Green Flag standards and Summers Street Park is no exception.

“Summers Street Park is an especially important project as green space makes up just 2% of Bevois Ward. I encourage everyone to take a look at the proposals and have their say on the proposed improvements to help shape the local neighbourhood.”

On Thursday 20 July, Southampton will be host to this year’s prestigious Green Flag Awards event where over 800 submissions for green spaces across South England will find out if they have been successful. We have put forward four more parks for this award this year:

Successful parks are set to be announced later this week.
