Sure Start in Southampton - Celebrating twenty years of support

From the opening of the first Sure Start centre in 2000 to now having several across the city each provides an invaluable range of services free of charge for families who need them

Southampton was among the first cities in the UK to open a Sure Start centre, providing early intervention, help and support for families, and has continued to provide this much needed support for hundreds of new parents and families for twenty years.

From the opening of the first Sure Start centre in 2000 to now having several across the city each provides an invaluable range of services free of charge for families who need them.

Whether it’s fun and welcoming play and healthy child activities to specialised support for families including recent arrivals to the UK or struggling parents who need a little bit of extra support, our Sure Start centres are easily accessible and can provide one off or continued support.

We’re committed to giving children and young people the best possible start in life and our Sure Start centres provide a range of opportunities for parents and children to be supported.

To celebrate the fantastic work of Sure Start we caught up with members of the Sure Start team to find out more about the specific activities and advice they offer and heard from services users who have gone on to become members of the team.

Julie Turley, Senior Family Support Worker said:

“The one thing that we can be proud of, and that we continue to be proud of, is that it’s always been about the families and the welfare of the families.”
