Traffic calming works to start on Spring Road/Station Road junction

Improvement works are set to start on Monday 26 February on the junction of Spring Road and Station Road in Sholing, funded by the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund

The junction of Spring Road and Station Road will have a raised table with new parallel zebra crossings for pedestrians and cyclists to reduce vehicle speeds and make walking, wheeling and cycling to and from Sholing Station, Porchester Road and onward destinations easier and safer. In addition, three sets of speed cushions will be installed on Spring Road between Miller’s Pond Gardens and Pinegrove Road as an additional measure to reduce traffic speeds in this area.

These works are a part of the Eastern Quietway scheme which will create a designated route between Miller’s Pond and the Itchen Bridge for people walking, wheeling or cycling as an alternative to using Portsmouth Road, providing a more pleasant journey for pedestrians and cyclists. While the improvements are installed, the junction of Spring Road and Station Road will be closed to vehicles for approximately eight weeks with diversion routes in place and clearly signposted. Councillor Eamonn Keogh, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "The Eastern Quietway scheme has come a long way since local people were first consulted about the proposals in summer 2022 which saw a majority of respondents state that each set of measures proposed would improve safety and reduce vehicle speeds.

“The works at Spring Road will help to meet both of these objectives and together with the already completed works at Sholing Station and Porchester Road, the current crossing upgrade at Portsmouth Road nearby to Manor Road South and the final works nearby to Miller’s Pond Local Nature Reserve, the Quietway route will deliver safer routes to local schools, Sholing and Woolston Stations, Woolston district centre and the city centre, via the Itchen Bridge."
