Waste collection update from the Leader of the council, Councillor Lorna Fielker, Friday 26 April 2024

Councillor Fielker provides a further update on disruption to waste collections

An open letter from Councillor Lorna Fielker, Leader of Southampton City Council

"This week I have been out with our waste collection crews and chatted through some of the hurdles for bin collections in our city with them. I spoke to people with a great work ethic who genuinely want to get a good job done.

"Last week we had some staff sickness as well as mechanical issues. However, additional resources deployed since my previous update have been working to address delayed collections and side waste, teams continue to prioritise the outstanding recycling backlog in date order.

"While we have seen an improvement in the collection of general waste on a week-by-week basis, we acknowledge that this still falls short of the service we strive to deliver. I recognise that there is still work to be done to improve our performance and optimise our collection routes. Southampton City Council remains committed to resolving this issue and ensuring regular collections are restored for all residents. I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding during this time.

"I empathise with the frustration caused and strongly encourage residents to report any missed bin collections online. I extend my sincere apologies again for any inconvenience this ongoing situation may have caused."
