Suicide Prevention Innovation Grant Fund

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight (Hampshire and IoW) Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) has developed a Suicide Prevention Programme and, as a result, established a Suicide Prevention Innovation Fund to seed-fund voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations to deliver innovative local projects across Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. These projects will be embedded in communities and will be responsive to local needs as expressed by service users, people with lived experience and ‘hard to reach’ groups.

Grants of up to £10,000 are available and bids will reflect national and local priorities for the Fund, and the principles which guide the work of the Suicide Prevention Programme.

The purpose of the Innovation Fund is to support innovative, community-based initiatives that explicitly address needs around self-harm and suicide prevention. Projects should not seek to replicate statutory services; instead, applications should address how the proposed project will better engage citizens in services.

The Fund is seeking to achieve real impact impact on mental health and suicide prevention within communities, and to embed suicide prevention and awareness in our communities, particularly for under-represented groups and those at highest-risk of suicide and self-harm. Proactive engagement with service users, those with lived experience and co-production will be expected to be central to project development and delivery.

It is important that projects are clear about what success within the project would be, and how this can be evidenced. An important outcome of the Innovation Fund is to add to the evidence-base around successful community-based service and interventions.

Bids should be sustainable beyond initial funding or be time-limited projects and should seek to engage with a range of statutory and community organisations to create a network and improve support and awareness across the system.


Applications for this Suicide Prevention Innovation Fund will only be considered towards projects and activities that significantly meet programme principles.

These are:

  • Sustainability: beyond the initial guaranteed period of funding

Added value

  • Improving quality and/or equity
  • Over and above commissioned services / ‘business as usual’ and/or increasing scalability
  • Adding value to existing suicide prevention actions at local level

Early intervention and prevention

  • Promoting protective factors for suicide and/or self-harm, addressing key risk factors
  • Consider interventions across different settings and including the wider determinants

Evidence based (or to inform the evidence base)

  • Informed by intelligence, published literature and/or stakeholder views
  • Co-production: people with lived experience and service user engagement
  • Universal approach with additional support for vulnerable groups
  • Life-course approach where appropriate.
