Eligibility criteria for funded places

Two year old children will be eligible for a funded nursery place if their family receives one of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Tax credits and you have an annual income of no more than £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit four-week run on (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

Check your child's eligibility

Your child may also be eligible if you receive some form of Universal Credit, subject to income. This is currently under review by the Department for Education (DfE). Southampton City Council is therefore currently unable to confirm funding for any child turning two on or after 1 January 2018, where parents/carers will only meet the eligibility criteria on the grounds of being receipt of Universal Credit. We are awaiting clarification from the DfE and will update this page as soon as we receive further information from them.

2 year olds who meet the following criteria are also eligible for a funded place:

  • The child has a current statement of special educational needs or an education, health and care plan
  • The child has a Disability Living Allowance
  • The child is looked after by their local authority
  • The child has left care through special guardianship or through an adoption or residence order
