There are often difficult and complex reasons why a house may be left empty. Regardless of the circumstances, a home that has been left empty for a long time can become the target of antisocial behaviour and cause problems for the neighbourhood. A home that has been empty for too long may also become derelict. This can cause issues if the building itself has been neglected.

The council does have powers to intervene in situations where the condition of the property is likely to be a risk to health and safety. We work with homeowners in the city to try to make sure houses are brought back into use if they have been empty for more than six months.

Please note: It is very unlikely that action would be taken where the only concerns are with overgrown gardens or unsightly conditions.
