Southampton Safe Place Network - case studies

Here at Weston Secondary, we were excited to get involved with the Southampton Safe Place initiative as we felt it was important that our local community knew that they had a place that they could come to in times of need.

We chose our Community Hub as the area that would be designated as being our safe space, we display the badge in the window and have sent information to all of our families about the scheme. We have a regular foot fall of parents through the hub, as we run our uniform support and food bank from this area, and are asked regularly about the Safe Place initiative. I genuinely believe that the knowledge that it is here has empowered a number of members of our community to live life more confidently, reassured by the fact that refuge could be sought if required. 

I feel the scheme does more work than we can identify officially, as it is often used without us knowing. On a number of occasions, we have had parents come in and ask for advice, or even just for a cup of tea, and without the need for a full disclosure of their seeking refuge, have been able to collect their thoughts, plan next steps, or get further signposting to support. I believe the Safe Space initiative has helped them know that they will be listened to.  

On moving to our current premises, we wanted to ensure that everyone who visited us felt safe and welcomed. On top of this, we wanted to make it publicly known that we are a safe haven that people can come to if they find themselves in a tricky situation, where they will be looked after and listened to in a calm and non-judgmental environment.

We have felt well supported by the team at Safe Places, with regular contact and resources posted to us for the shop floor.

We have received printed assets for the shop floor, and digital assets to circulate to workers.

Earlier this year (2022) a regular customer came in who seemed very upset. He talked to a worker for quite a while about it and afterwards he wanted to pass along how important we are as a space. He said that he values that if he's upset, he knows he can come in and leave feeling at least a little better! 

I think it could create a positive and caring culture within Southampton if businesses get involved. 

Yes, I think the more organisations get involved the more people will know about this scheme. All people have the right to feel safe in their own environment. Providing safe places on the high street and a willing ear to listen is a beautiful thing that will hopefully create a happier Southampton.
