Vaccination Champions and One Southampton

Working in partnership with the NHS we produced flyers with details of COVID-19 vaccination walk-in clinic flyers. The flyers contained details of the walk-in clinics available across the city together with the ages it’s available for and operational times.

With the help of our Vaccination Champions, the flyers were distributed to the community, put onto noticeboards and in shop windows. This gave residents the information they needed, even if they don’t use social media.

As part of the One Southampton campaign to promote COVID-19 vaccination uptake in the city, infant, junior and primary schools were invited to help distribute ‘Vaccination Information Packs’ to children and families. These packs contained:

• Let’s talk about COVID-19 jabs flyer – The flyer contained the who, what, why, when and where of vaccines in simple, plain language. It also promoted the early years provision of 30 hours free childcare to parents across the city and was translated into 16 languages.
• Living with COVID flyer – Promoting safe behaviours such as wearing a face covering, hand washing or sanitising, fresh air/ventilation and vaccination.
• NHS vaccines eligibility and doses information
• Stay Connected postcard – Helping residents to find vital COVID-19 information.
• Face mask and hand sanitiser
• Drawing Competition – This was for children to express a positive thing that they experienced during COVID-19, for example learning a new skill, playing in the park or reading books.

The Drawing Competition saw nearly 10,000 children invited to enter. The children were asked to share the things they did during lockdown. This could include learning to ride a bike, cooking at home or reading books, all in the hopes of winning a prize. The prizes for each winner included a wonderful day out in the city, a Beanie Baby, a certificate and the chance to meet The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Jacqui Rayment.

A targeted social media campaign to reach residents who speak a variety of different languages was launched in the Autumn. Animations were produced to share key COVID-19 messages. These animations were shared on several different social media platforms to promote the importance of COVID-19 vaccinations.

• Urdu

In key locations around the city, there have been health and wellbeing hubs where people can access health checks, such as:

• BMI checks
• Weight checks
• Support to stop smoking
• Cancer support, which includes how to spot cancer
• Information on COVID-19 and the vaccinations to help stop misinformation

In celebration of the work our Vaccine Champions did thanks to the funding, we invited all organisations to the One Southampton: Celebrating Partnerships event that took place on 29 September 2022.

Attendees were invited to The Mayor’s Parlour in the Civic Centre, where there was the opportunity to showcase the work the Vaccine Champions had delivered. Vaccination Champions had the opportunity to meet with other organisations that received COVID-19 funding and network with other Vaccination Champions, sharing exploring new ways of working together in the future.

On Wednesday 5 October 2022, the One Southampton Jobs & Wellbeing Fair was held at Southampton Guildhall.

The Jobs & Wellbeing Fair was an opportunity to bring employers and health and wellbeing services together to help residents in light of the rising cost of living.

Those who attended the event could:

• Speak to employers actively recruiting for staff
• Attend workshops to help improve their employment chances
• Engage with health and wellbeing services
• Get their blood pressure checked 

Sixty COVID-19 autumn booster vaccinations were given to those eligible.

The day was a great success and was featured on ITV Meridian news.
