GCSE results in Southampton

Praises for city's pupils after grades released

Pupils, teachers, parents and carers in Southampton have been praised after the city’s GCSE results were released today.

This year’s results show that 77% per cent of pupils achieved a grade 4 to 9 in English, and 70% per cent of pupils achieved a grade 4 to 9 in Maths.

These figures are based on the results reported by 10 of the 12 secondary schools in Southampton. For the second year, pupils did not sit GCSE exams due to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions, and this should be noted as important context when making any comparisons with results from previous years.

Cllr James Baillie, Cabinet Member for Education at Southampton City Council, said: “Congratulations to all pupils who are collecting their GCSE results today and who should be proud of what they have achieved. It’s been another difficult academic year with pupils missing time in classrooms due to the pandemic. Despite this difficult and disrupted year, it’s been great to see pupils working hard, together with teachers and parents and carers, to achieve such positive outcomes and everyone should feel proud of what they have achieved.

“Whether or not the results are what you hoped for, please don’t worry. Help, support and information is available to help guide you through your next steps.”
