Millbrook footbridge to be renovated

Southampton City Council in partnership with Highways Partner, Balfour Beatty Living Places will be renovating the Millbrook Road Footbridge from Monday 10 July, with work anticipated to last for approximately 7 weeks and will be completed before the end of the school Summer holidays

These important renovation works will provide a long-term refurbishment to the existing footbridge, whilst maintaining the availability of a key pedestrian route across Millbrook Road West. In addition, the works will also improve the attractiveness of the bridge for local residents, with extensive coating removal and repainting of the entire structure, new surfacing to be provided across the footbridge and cutting back of overhanging vegetation close to the Foundry Lane access.

Throughout the works, scaffolding will be erected surrounding the bridge and it will be enclosed with protective sheeting to ensure that the works can be carried out safely above Millbrook Road West. As a result, it will not be possible for pedestrians/cyclists to use the footbridge from 8am on Monday 10 July until the works are completed.

Whilst the works are taking place, traffic will be maintained on Millbrook Road West as it is a key route into the City. However, there will be some overnight road closures; these will be on:

  • 17-20 July for four nights
  • 24-28 July and 31 July for five nights

With the final night time closures on 14-18 August for five nights.

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment said:

“This important scheme to renovate the footbridge is essential to maintain high safety standards, as well as the safety of those who regularly use the footbridge for work, leisure or study purposes. Once complete, this new footbridge will benefit all users and improve the image of the local area. The decision to only close the road overnight will ensure that there is as little disruption as possible.”
