Trees planted at Redbridge Community School

Southampton City Council and Saints Football Club worked together to plant 1000 trees planted around the perimeter of the school

We worked with Southampton Football Club and identified Redbridge Community School as a location to plant 1,000 trees around the perimeter of the school’s site. Not only do the trees that were planted at the school support absorbing noise pollution and carbon emissions, they also contribute to the ambitious goal set out in the Green City Plan to plant at least 5,000 trees in Southampton by 2030.

Southampton Football Club ground staff attended the school alongside the SCC tree planting team to show the children how to plant and nurture the trees, as well as teaching them about biodiversity and the importance of the positive impact the trees will have, both at the school and in the surrounding area.

Kate Martin, Executive Director, said: “We are delighted that Southampton Football Club have planted these trees as part of their Home Grown Initiative and are hugely encouraged they have created the initiative to support their sustainability strategy, The Halo Effect. It’s important everyone works together to reduce our impact on the environment and we are seeing more and more businesses, individuals and community groups joining forces to make a difference.

“We look forward to working with Southampton Football Club to ensure we address the challenges that climate change presents us and we welcome more residents and businesses to pledge support to our Green City Vision available online.”

Caroline Carlin, Southampton Football Club’s Operational Standards and Compliance Manager, said: “Alongside Southampton City Council’s Green City Plan, our environmental commitment is to help make Southampton a cleaner, greener, healthier and more sustainable city. We are really pleased to be working towards that goal by planting these young saplings in celebration of our academy debutants.”

We’ve committed to over 60 specific actions to help us deliver a green city by 2030, broken down into five themes: sustainable energy and carbon reduction, delivering clean air, our natural environment, resources, water and waste management, and sustainable travel. The trees planted at Redbridge Community School are a huge step forward for our natural environment and our mission to plant more trees in and around our city.
