Have your say - Safe City Partnership strategy (2022-2027)

Southampton’s Safe City Partnership is seeking views on its new five-year strategy for tackling crime and disorder, keeping people safe and promoting safer communities. The 12-week public consultation launches today (09 August 2021)

The partnership is made up of Southampton City Council, Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Hampshire, Southampton and Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group, Probation Services, Southampton Voluntary Services and GO! Southampton, the Business Improvement District.

The Safe City Partnership has several core functions and is responsible for governance of the locally commissioned services to prevent and reduce offending, support victims, provide treatment services and build a safer community.

The public are invited to comment on the strategy, which aims to address any issues the public have raised through ongoing community engagement, as well as an annual survey undertaken in the autumn last year that has informed the objectives set until 2027.

The Partnership has identified three main priorities for keeping Southampton safe over a five-year period:

  1. Keeping people safe from harm
  2. Preventing and reducing offending
  3. Creating safe, stronger communities

Councillor Spiros Vassiliou, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture & Heritage said: “Working together in a joined-up way with our partners is key to how we can reduce crime across the city. But we know there is more that can be done to ensure that Southampton is a safe city.

“Strengthening relationships with our communities will be at the heart of our five-year plan and this consultation is an opportunity for you to comment on the approach and areas of focus, such as violence against women and girls, serious violence and anti-social behaviour.”

Superintendent Simon Dodds, District Commander for Southampton, said: “We welcome the opportunity for communities to comment on how we, and other statutory partners in the city, can make Southampton safer over the next five years.

“Southampton is a busy, urban city and that’s why working as a partnership to reduce crime and make Southampton safer is so important.

“We can only do this when we work together with communities and focus our approach on the issues that really matter to the people of Southampton.

“Driving down serious violence and keeping people safe from harm requires a multi-agency effort and community support and we are absolutely committed to working with our partners on a strategy that will reduce crime.”

Southampton’s statutory partners continue to maintain that the city is safe. All agencies recognise the need to enable our residents, our businesses and those we work with, to understand more about the work that goes on in the city to promote the safety of those who live, work and visit the city, by reducing crime.

The survey was open from Monday 09 August until 01 November 2021.
