Our commitment to an inclusive, safe and diverse city

Southampton City Council reaffirms our commitment to building an inclusive, safe and diverse city

Following the UK Supreme Court ruling on 16 April, we want to reaffirm our commitment to building a city which is inclusive, safe and diverse, respecting the law and people’s individual rights.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Lorna Fielker said: “We recognise the emotional impact this ruling has had for many people, and we stand in solidarity with our trans community.

“We await updated statutory guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, but I, and the wider council, believe that diversity strengthens us and we want to reiterate our commitment to creating a city and an organisation where everyone feels respected, supported and able to thrive: regardless of their gender identity.

“We all have a part to play in making sure our world remains welcoming and supportive. Treating one another with kindness, respect and understanding is fundamental to our values as a nation. Discrimination, harassment, or marginalisation of any kind have no place – whether you are a resident or visitor, a business owner, a student or teacher, or a council employee or supplier.

“We’re all human beings, with the right to belong, be safe, and be our true selves. Together, we can and will continue to work towards a society and a city where everyone can succeed.”
