Playtime at Portswood Rec reaches new level
New play equipment has been installed at Portswood Rec which has been funded by Southampton City Council and the Friends of Portswood Rec community group, with help from the children of Portswood Primary School who went above and beyond with their fundraising efforts
Thanks to this collaboration, even more play equipment has been installed. The new equipment includes:
- Zipline
- New junior multi-play
- New swings
- Cliff Rider, which is a first of its kind for Southampton
- New tipi spinner
Portswood Rec is a much-loved community play area that is frequently used by Portswood School for games lessons and by children and parents/carers after school, on weekends, and in the holidays.
Kompan Ltd, who provided the play equipment, have been working closely with Portswood School and organised a colouring competition for the children to get involved in. The 10 winners joined us and local MP, Satvir Kaur at the opening, for the presentation of their prizes.
Bev Pearce from Friends of Portswood Rec said: “The council have been brilliant with their support throughout the process of getting the play area refurbished with help from local councillors both in Portswood and Swaythling. We have also enjoyed working closely with the fantastic Nicci Aplin at Kompan on the design of the playground to make sure we included the equipment people asked for during our community consultation.”
“The opening of Portswood Rec is a celebration of what can be achieved when we work together”.
Councillor John Savage, Cabinet Member for Green City and Net Zero at Southampton City Council said: “It’s great to be here today and to see first-hand how much hard work has gone into the new play area. I know how much this space means to our residents, and I’m delighted to see that this new play park is open in time for the start of Summer. I’m grateful to everyone involved in this project and I hope the children will enjoy their reward for all their hard work and fundraising efforts.”
