Street lighting switch-off hours extended – 1 to 5.30am

From Friday 1 December, we will be extending 'part-night lighting' hours in most residential roads outside of the city centre

We will be extending the hours of our part-night lighting initiative in many residential areas of the city. Currently, we are turning off streetlights between 1-4am. As of Friday 1 December 2023, switch-off hours will run from 1-5.30am.

We have met with Hampshire Constabulary and have carefully monitored the impacts of the part-night lighting initiative we implemented in April. No noticeable rises in criminal activities or changes in policing issues have been found.

The initiative, originally agreed in February 2023, is in response to increased energy costs and a need to reduce our energy usage across the council and as part of our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. Lights will not be switched off on roads where there are concerns about the potential effect on crime.

Before our decision in February, we consulted with the public and 67% of respondents were supportive of the initiative. You can check our partner website to see which lights are part of this initiative and find more information on our own Street lighting webpage.
