Southampton Family Information Service
The Family Information Service offers free, tailored and impartial advice for families. The service is available to anyone taking care of children or young people aged 0-19 years of age. For children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities it is available up to 25 years of age.
The Family Information Service gives advice and signposts to appropriate services. The core service offered by Southampton Family Information Service is free.
This includes advice on:
- Parenting and family support
- Local activities
- Parent and toddler groups
- Children's health
- Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
There is a Brokerage Service for parents needing support in finding childcare or early education.
Support is also available for professionals working with families in Southampton.

The Family Information Service aims to supply accurate and up to date information. Records are regularly checked and updated. The service have the following targets:
- Childcare records updated each term within Southampton City Council’s Sufficiency Data Collection
- Family Services records updated at least once every six months
The Family Information Service offers impartial information. The service provide information on a case by case basis depending on a families needs. They will not promote a singular type of childcare provision or individual provider. Advice will include signposting to further information and suggested questions to ask providers. Parents can then make an informed choice.
Confidentiality and data protection SHOW

Response times SHOW
We aim to respond to enquiries as soon as possible, either on the same working day or next working day. We then aim to resolve your query within 10 working days. Sometimes requests may take more time. If we aren’t able to resolve a query within 10 working days we will let you know when we will be able to respond.
If you receive advice from the Family Information Service, we will ask you to complete a feedback form. Your feedback will help to improve our services. Your feedback also helps us work with childcare providers to meet families' needs.
