Safer recruitment

It is crucial to ensure whilst making recruitment decisions, the children, young people and any adults at risk in your setting are safeguarded from harm. Southampton Early Years providers are creating a culture of safe recruitment by implementing strict procedures that identify those who may pose a risk to children and young people.

Following the launch of the Common Inspection Framework (Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework and Inspecting safeguarding in early years, education and skills settings), Ofsted ensure that all Early Years providers are fulfilling their statutory safeguarding obligations and keeping children safe.

In addition to this, there are a range of document checks that must be implemented and adhered to ensure someone has the right to work in the UK.

  • Images of documents employers may request
  • Information on the document checks needed for the right to work
  • Information on proving the right to work and accompanying documents

Disclosure and Barring Service

The DBS website contains all the information a provider or an employee will need with regards to DBSs. All applications must be submitted online. Although each DBS check has no official expiry date, when checking a DBS all information will be as accurate as the date the DBS was applied on. Employers are responsible for undertaking additional suitability checks for all successful job applicants and decide when a DBS should be renewed. Employers reserve the right to withdraw job offers if the applicant is deemed unsuitable.

DBS Update Service

The Update Service reduces the need to apply for multiple DBSs following a change of workplace within the same workforce (Child Workforce or Adult Workforce) or when a re-check is required. The DBS holder must apply for the update service within 30 days of the DBS certificate being issued. For a staff member who is in the process of getting a standard or enhanced DBS online applications must be submitted within 28 days which enables service users to:

  • Keep their DBS certificates up to date
  • Employers can check a DBS certificate
  • Certificate becomes portable
