Celebrating 20 years of Junior Neighbourhood Wardens

Present and previous Junior Neighbourhood Wardens came together this summer to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our popular scheme for children and young people.

Over the last two decades more than 600 young people have got involved with the Junior Neighbourhood Warden programme; completing over 400 community projects ranging from gardening and litter picking to murals, mosaics and fundraising. Plus, over 180 intergenerational sessions have been held bringing together the Junior Wardens with senior residents in our supported housing schemes to help break down barriers between young and old.

To mark the 20th anniversary, a special party was held in Mansel Park, Millbrook in August. Opened by the Lord Mayor of Southampton along with some of the original Junior Neighbourhood Wardens from 2003, the free event included lots of fun, family activities.

Jack Delaney, who joined the scheme in 2003, said: "It’s a huge privilege to be a small part of this. A lot of what you learn as junior wardens sets you up for the rest of your life. I have a family of my own now and I’m always quick to remind my children not to drop litter and am picking it up after them, telling them it needs to go in the bin!"

Jack’s brother Jamie added: "We were surprised to see the scheme’s still going, it’s bringing back a lot of fond memories."

The day was also an opportunity to relaunch the membership scheme to enable a new generation of youngsters to take part and become positive role models in their communities.

The scheme offers the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, build self-confidence, and join in fun activities. Plus, new recruits now also benefit from a free membership card that provides access to exclusive benefits and discounts including £1 swim, £1 gym, £5 kayaking and £5 Ringo sessions all courtesy of Active Nation.

The Junior Neighbourhood Warden programme is open to 7-12 year olds, and many have gone on to become Team Leaders (open to 13-18 year olds) to continue their involvement with the scheme and to pass on their skills and knowledge to younger children.
