Extra cash for neighbourhood improvements

We’re always looking for new ways to make your homes and neighbourhoods even better places to live, and our Estate Improvement Programme is designed to do just that.

Each year the Local Housing Offices across the city are allocated money to make estate improvements that have been suggested or requested by local residents. The money can be spent in whatever way the local community needs or wants, for example by improving the look of neighbourhoods, enhancing safety or tackling antisocial behaviour. From creating colourful garden areas to installing better lighting and increasing parking; the programme has funded many projects over the years which have all benefited residents.

Read on to find out some of the improvements that were made during the last year.

West District:

New paving has been laid around the blocks in Birch Close, Millbrook to improve pathways. Other works over recent years have included improvements to the bin stores and parking area.

Central District:

When residents at St Matthews Close complained of issues around antisocial behaviour involving young people loitering and using drugs, we worked with other agencies including the police to tackle this issue. We have installed new metal gates to make the area more secure and prevent access to non-residents. This has already had a marked impact on reducing the problems with antisocial behaviour.

East District:

A new community garden has been created at Canberra Towers following requests from residents. Working with Mayfield Nurseries, a new community garden was created at the tower block to provide opportunities for local residents to get involved with gardening and enjoy the outdoor space.

Got a good idea?

If you have a suggestion of where and how we should spend the Estate Improvement funding in your neighbourhood, please contact your Local Housing Office or talk to your Neighbourhood Warden or Block Rep. When lockdown restrictions ease and we are able to safely resume regular Neighbourhood Walkabouts, you can join staff for a walkabout in your neighbourhood to point out any issues of concern and suggest where Estate Improvement funding could be spent.
